Kayu
plans to open 7th outlet soon
BY ELAINE ANG
RESTORAN Kayu Nasi Kandar, a household name in nasi
kandar, plans to open its seventh outlet by early
next year, according to its owner Burkhan Mohd.
“We are looking at some locations like Shah Alam,
Malacca and Johor Baru for the new outlet,” he
told a media briefing after the launch of the restaurant's
new happy hour for ladies promotion in Petaling
Jaya on Aug 7.
Kayu Nasi Kandar has six outlets: one each in Petaling
Jaya, Subang Jaya, Putrajaya, Shah Alam and two
in Penang. It currently employs a total of 200 staff.

Its
newest outlet in SS2 Petaling Jaya, which was opened
on May 22, can accommodate 350 to 400 people in
its double-storey building.
Burkhan said its upper floor, specially allocated
for private functions, is air-conditioned and can
house over 100 people. “We get an average of
seven private functions weekly,” he said.
Kelvin Hong, chief executive officer of the restaurant's
creative consultant, Tableview (M) Sdn Bhd, said
outlets that had such high traffic like the SS2
outlet could have a turnover of 15,000 to 20,000
customers per month.
The restaurant currently serves 30 to 40 dishes
and customers who frequent the place are old-timers,
going back three generations, from students to executives
and even retirees.
Its unique happy hour promotion is for ladies only
and is available every Thursday from 4pm to 9pm,
when a glass of teh tarik is given free for every
glass purchased.
Hong said the idea for the happy hour was the result
of brainstorming sessions between the company and
Burkhan to inject more fun and excitement to the
daily no-frills restaurant dining.
“Anyway, many customers consume more than one
drink per visit,” he said.
Hong said that besides the happy hour promotion,
the company had many others in the pipeline for
Kayu Nasi Kandar, including some charity events
and the introduction of teh tarik in jugs.
“Although mamak nasi kandar is already famous,
we want to introduce something special and new for
our customers,” he said.
He added that the mamak nasi kandar business was
expected to continue to grow as it was “the heart
and soul of Malaysia.”
